Practical Dream, a 2-year-old filly bred by Walmac Farm, tallied her first stakes victory Saturday at Del Mar in the $100,000 Desi Arnaz S.
After finishing second to Silent Law in the Oct. 25 Anoakia S. at Santa Anita, Practical Dream turned the tables on her foe in Saturday’s seven-furlong race. Silent Law broke swiftly to take the early lead, but Practical Dream quickly confronted her and took a narrow lead at the quarter-mile mark. She widened her lead around the turn and hit the stretch with a two-length advantage.
Kept to the task down the lane by jockey Anthony Fresu, Practical Dream held Silent Law at bay, winning by 1 ¼-lengths in 1:24.47 on a fast track. Mawu, who like the winner was bred and raised by Walmac, was three-quarters of a length back in third.
“Our filly was sharp today and she’s only going to improve with distance,” said trainer Tim Yakteen. “She obviously showed up today.”
Practical Dream is now 2-1-0 in three starts and has earned $123,486 for owners Leslie & Pierre Amestoy and Roger Beasley, who purchased the gray/roan filly for $210,000 at the OBS Spring 2-year-old sale in April.
Practical Dream is by Practical Joke and out of Imforeal, making her a half-sister to two-time stakes winner Sister Peacock. Imforeal is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Brother Derek.
