Pinehurst – Alan Porter Mating Analysis
A grade one winning two-year-old and millionaire, Pinehurst is by the prolific Twirling Candy out of a Giant’s Causeway mare from a fast family full of black-type, and is bred on a very similar cross to Gun Runner.
Like his sire, Candy Ride, Twirling Candy has been exceptionally successful with Storm Cat line mares. He has Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Rombauer out of a mare by Cowboy Cal (broodmare sire of a Gun Runner grade one winner who is inbred 3×3 to Giant’s Causeway), and grade two winner Bob and Jackie out of a mare by another Giant’s Causeway son, Eskendereya. Other sources of Giant’s Causeway include Not This Time (already broodmare sire of a Twirling Candy stakes winner), First Samurai, Giant Gizmo, Creative Cause, Brody’s Causeway, Carpe Diem and Fed Biz. Giant’s Causeway is also a brother to Freud and is bred
on the same cross as After Market.
From other branches of Storm Cat, Twirling Candy also has grade one winner Ag Bullet out of a mare by Forestry (sire of Shackleford and Discreet Cat), graded winner Law Abidin Citizen out of a mare by Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart, Tale of Ekati and Gio Ponti, and grandsire of Kantharos – broodmare sire of a Twirling Candy stakes winner – Uncaptured and Girvin), graded stakes winner Evvie Jets out of a mare by Consolidator, three stakes winners out of mares by Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Accord), and stakes winners out of mares by Henny Hughes (by Hennessy, also sire of Johannesburg and Cactus Ridge and grandsire of Scat Daddy), Stormy Atlantic (sire of Get Stormy), Bluegrass Cat, Cat Thief, Yankee Gentleman and Tiger Ridge. Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief – broodmare sire of two Twirling Candy stakes winners – Shanghai Bobby and Majesticperfection), Catienus and Bluegrass Cat.
Storm Cat is a Northern Dancer line stallion, and from the Sadler’s Wells branch of that line, Twirling Candy has the grade one winning Concrete Rose out of a mare by Powerscourt, a son of Sadler’s Wells. He also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells son, El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy – broodmare sire of five Twirling Candy stakes winners – and Artie Schiller). There is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells son King of Kings. Candy Ride and sons have also done well with mares from the male-line Nureyev, a three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells, including stakes winners out of mares
by Theatrical and Pivotal, with other sources including Unusual Heat, Stravinsky and Atticus.
Twirling Candy is a Fappiano line horse, but both he and his sire have done well when crossed back over Fappiano line mares. He has grade one winner Finley’sluckycharm out of a mare by Victory Gallop, from Twirling Candy’s own Cryptoclearance branch. He also has grade one winner Gift Box and graded scorer Fore Left out of mares by Unbridled’s Song, and from mares by sons of that horse, grade one winner Beyond Brilliant out of a mare by First Defence, graded winner Danzing Candy from a daughter of Songandaprayer and a stakes winner from a daughter of Rockport Harbor. Unbridled’s Song is also sire of Liam’s
Map, Arrogate, Old Fashioned, Half Ours, Dunkirk, Even The Score and Graydar). His sire, Candy Ride, has also enjoyed success with Fappiano through Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister and grandsire of American Pharoah and Classic Empire) there are two graded winners, including grade one winner Separationofpowers. It could also be worth considering introducing Fappiano through Broken Vow and Quiet American, the grandsire of Midnight Lute.
Fappiano is a Mr. Prospector line horse and from the Gone West branch, Twirling Candy has multiple graded winner Morticia out of a mare by Mr. Greeley (sire of El Corredor and Why Why Why) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Came Home, and other Gone West sources include Speightstown (sire of Munnings), Grand Slam, Elusive Quality (sire of Quality Road also broodmare sire of a Twirling Candy stakes winner – and Smarty Jones) and Proud Citizen. Candy Ride and sons have six stakes winners out of Distorted Humor line mares, including grade one winner Cyberknife out of a mare by Flower Alley with other Distorted Humor sources are Maclean’s Music, Jimmy Creed, Alternation, Brethren and Khozan. There is also a stakes winner by Candy Ride out of a mare by Fusaichi Pegasus, who is bred
on the same cross as Distorted Humor.
Mr. Prospector son, Carson City, is a Mr. Prospector/Blushing Groom cross, like Candy Ride, and Candy Ride and sons have three stakes winners out of Carson City line mares, including stakes winners out of mares by Lord Carson and Flying Chevron. This suggests trying daughters of City Zip (sire of Run Away And Hide), Five Star Day, Cuvee and Pollard’s Vision. From other branches of the Mr. Prospector Candy Ride has a stakes winner out of a mare by Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid) and a grade two winner out of a mare by Street Cry (sire of Street Sense and Street Boss).
Over A.P. Indy line mares Twirling Candy has grade one winner Collusion Illusion out of a mare by First Dude (by Stephen Got Even, whose son, Stevie Wonderboy, broodmare sire of a Candy Ride stakes winner). Twirling Candy’s multiple graded stakes winner Gear Jockey is out of a mare by Tapit (sire of Constitution, Frosted, Cupid, Tonalist, Trappe Shot – broodmare sire of a Twirling Candy graded winner – Tapiture and Tapizar). Tapit is a son of Pulpit and there is also a Twirling Candy graded winner out of a mare by Pulpit son, Stroll (also broodmare sire of a Candy Ride grade one winner), and this also suggests other Pulpit
sons as Sky Mesa, Flashback, Mr. Speaker, Corinthian (broodmare sire of a Twirling Candy stakes winner). Overall, Candy Ride and sons have more than 50 stakes winners out of A.P. Indy line mares, seven of them grade one. They also include champion Game Winner out of a mare by A.P. Indy himself, and a grade one winner out of a mare by Old Trieste. Candy Ride and sons have five stakes winners out of mares Bernardini (sire of To Honor and Serve
and Stay Thirsty). Candy Ride and sons have been very good with Malibu Moon mares, including Champion Sierra Leone, and there are also Candy Ride line stakes winners out of mares by A.P. Indy sons, Mineshaft (sire of Dialed In and Discreetly Mine), Flatter (broodmare sire of a Candy Ride line grade one winner) and his brother Congrats and Dance With Ravens. A.P. Indy could also be brought in through Jump Start, Majestic Warrior and Giralomo.
There appears to be a very strong affinity for Candy Ride and sons for mares descending from Caro. There are 12 stakes winners by Candy Ride and sons out of mares from the male- line of Indian Charlie’s sire, In Excess, including grade one winner Geaux Rocket Ride out of a mare by Uncle Mo (sire of Nyquist, Laoban and Outwork), graded stakes winners out of mares by Indian Charlie and In Excess, and stakes winners out of mares by Cindago and Bring the Heat. In Excess is also sire of Notional, and Indian Charlie is also sire of Souper Speedy, Adios Charlie, Bwana Charlie and Liaison. We can also note that Cozzene is a Caro
son who is broodmare sire of a Candy Ride stakes winner, and he is sire of Mizzen Mast.
There is a trio of stakes winners, two graded by Candy Ride and sons out of Successful Appeal mares, including graded winner Trophy Chaser, by Twirling Candy. Successful Appeal is a son of Valid Appeal, also sire of Valid Wager and Valid Expectations. There are also two stakes winners by Candy Ride out of mares by Arch (sire of Blame), from the Roberto line that also produced Lear Fan, the dam of Twirling Candy stakes winner Fame Star.
